Greyhounds are not particularly fussy when it comes to food, and they will eat as much as they’re given. It is easy to over-feed a Grey in the name of ‘love’, just understand you will shorten their lifespan.
Bench-surfing
Your hound’s height will present it with opportunities that you must be aware of. They are usually as tall as a table and can easily reach items on benches. They can walk along the edge of a table or bench and sniff along the entire length (bench surfing). They are also opportunistic and will take food apparently ‘left for them’. Your education will depend on how quickly you learn to not leave food unattended.
Protein
A Grey should be fed 0.01% of their body weight in protein, daily.
E.g. a 30Kg hound will need 300gms of protein daily divided across the number of times they are fed.
Your dog will benefit from a range of different proteins including raw poultry or raw or cooked fish and red meat.
NOTE: Never feed your dog cooked bones
The protein is best supplemented with dry food, vegetables, or rice.
Canned Food
If feeding your Grey a predominantly canned food diet, you will need to take extra care of their dental hygiene. Ironically for a breed that has been bred for athletic perfection, their teeth are their main point of weakness.
Whilst their jaws and teeth are long, their jaw muscles don’t support chewing of big and heavy items. As a result, their teeth often don’t get enough abrasion to keep the plaque from building up on their gums. This can lead to gum infections and the loss of teeth.
Dental hygiene can be achieved by regular brushing or by supplementing their diet with raw chicken frames, necks and bones.
Feeding Frequency
Your Grey will probably be used to either two or three meals a day. Avoid providing treats or snacks between meals
Vegetables & Fruit
Greyhounds usually like vegetables or fruit. Offer them raw or cooked.
Things to Avoid
Greyhounds, like other dogs, should not be fed the following: grapes, nuts, onions, and chocolate. Accidental exposure will cause no long-term harm.
