How you manage, control, and restrain your hound will largely rest on these three essential items.
Harnesses
These are usually styled to slip over the neck and clip in one, or two, places around the torso. They allow a lead to be attached to them between the hound’s shoulders. This is the best point of attachment to control your hound.
They should be sized and fitted to be loose and comfortable around the chest. They come in a wide range of materials, styles, and features. Some have handles on the back to allow a stronger grip and control if required.
Why harnesses are preferred to collars is because collars that are sized for a Grey’s neck can slip off their narrower heads. Additionally, if a Grey reacts to something and pulls quickly a neck attachment can cause injury.
Collars
Greyhound owners tend to have several collars for each of their hounds. The reason for this is hard to rationalise, other than fashion and pride. The recommended collar for hounds is Martingale-style. They are usually 20-40cm in width and come in a range of materials.
House Collars
House collars are usually narrower, and clip simply, or just slip over the head. They are designed for comfort.
Leads
Leads come in standard lengths of 1.2m, 1.8m or 3m. Choose a lead based on its strength, elasticity and handle.
