You may hear people talk of ‘adopting’ a Greyhound rather than ‘buying’ a Greyhound. It’s the same thing. Where you choose to get your Greyhound from makes the key difference.
There are many organisations across the world, and in Australia, that facilitate the adoption of ex-racing greyhounds. It’s easy to simply Google ‘adopt a greyhound’ to find a suitable adoption organisation for you. From our experience, it is better to go to one of these organisations, as they know the breed and are supported by the racing industry. Greyhounds can also be acquired from the RSPCA and other pet shelters.
If you use a registered Greyhound adoption organisation, you will need to complete an application form. Expect to be asked about your lifestyle, your home, your family, other pets, whether you have stairs, fences, a pool, floor coverings i.e. tiles/carpet, gates, a backyard, undercover areas, etc. The organisation may also request a home visit (and photos of your home). This is done to ensure that they give you the most compatible dog for you, your family, and your lifestyle.
Once the application form and home visit are completed and approved, you will be introduced to several suitable dogs available at the time. We recommend allowing the dog to choose you as this will ensure they are comfortable with you from the start.
